Waitemata DHB Maternal Mental Health team hosted the meeting at North Shore Hospital.

We discussed updates from across the region. Bernadette Salmon presented a slide show on epigenetics. Bianca discussed a story of a 3 year old presenting with Regulatory Disorder - underactive/self-absorbed.

Tenth meeting

The meeting was hosted by The Anglican Trust for Women and Children. Many thanks to Michelle Ball, AWTC’s director, for a very special day. Tania Wilson and Epenesa Olo-Whaanga presented their impression of the International IMH conference in Japan. Upcoming training opportunities were discussed. Augustina Dreisen presented the SAFE and BASE programs.

After the meeting, we had a tour of the Granger Grove residential parenting program.

The meeting was dedicated primarily to updates from various groups present: Anglican Trust for Women and Children, Waitemata DHB, Pregnancy and Parental Services, Counties Manukau DHB, Werry Centre, Waikato, Family Start, Kari Centre.

We had a terrific time in Hamilton, the visit to Mothercraft Unit was especially interesting.

We discussed delineation of Auckland Regional IMHAANZ group, given the existence of a Midland group. Other subjects of interest were: brief history of this group, liaison with CYFS, where should infant mental health services sit within DHBs (child vs maternal), training and resources available.

A high energy meeting held at Whirinaki. Hinemoa Elder and He Kaakano Child, Youth and Adolescent service, were our very welcoming hosts. People present decided unanimously to accept the invitation to become a regional IMHAANZ (Infant Mental Health Association of Aotearoa New Zealand) group, part of WAIMH.

Small group at this meeting. Midwives were not able to participate as planned.

We discussed the difficulties with the term “Infant Mental Health” and the significance of addressing problems in infancy, rather than when children are older or in adolescence.

Dr. Sally Merry presented an update on the Counties Manukau Infant Mental Health literature review.  We discussed the recent Infant Mental Health Day and the launch of Infant Mental Health Association of Aotearoa / New Zealand.

We discussed the role of midwives in screening for maternal and infant mental health problems.

The Infant Mental Health Association of Aotearoa NZ (IMHAANZ) has its official launch on Thursday, 26 April 2007. You can download the registration form for this meeting and all-day symposium here.

There is also a half-day workshop with Beulah Warren, “Sharing our Understanding of Infant Communication with New Parents”, on Tuesday, 24 April. The registration form for this workshop (including ordering the “Getting To Know You” manual and video) can be found here.

To become a member of IMHAANZ, download the application form (and mail with a check, $35/year).

IMHAANZ is an affiliate of the World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH). To become a member of WAIMH, you can apply online. (US$ 127/year, including journal; credit card required)
